Barbara James To All Instructors
Barbara James (Strings) started her musical journey in Oklahoma City, with a ¾ violin and a love of music. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors Degree in Instrumental Music from the University of Central Oklahoma, then received her Masters in Computer Education from Lesley University. In 1986, Barbara’s teaching career began in the Edmond Public Schools in Edmond, Oklahoma. One year later, she moved to Las Vegas to continue teaching orchestra. During her 30 years in the Clark County School District, Barbara was an avid supporter of string education. She judged at the district and regional Solo and Ensemble Festivals, CCSD Middle School Orchestra Festival, as well as All State auditions. Barbara served as the CCSD Honor Orchestra Chairperson from 2008 to 2014, and she conducted the Washoe County School District Middle School Honor Orchestra in 2022. Barbara has been a member of the Nevada chapter of the American String Teachers Association for over 35 years, and served as treasurer of Nevada ASTA for 16 years. She has also been active in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra program as librarian, violin coach, and conductor. Ms. James retired from CCSD in 2017, which gives her more time to read books, volunteer at Pawtastic Friends (training center for shelter dogs), solve puzzles, and ride her Harley.
